Caregivers, fans of old-time radio and retro-mystery buffs are all invited to enjoy a blast from the past Saturday with The Adventures of Max Bennett – Detective.
Longtime Peace Arch News arts reporter Alex Browne wrote and co-directed the play, to be presented by Langley-based non-profit group Family Caring For Family – which was founded by Stephanie LaFreniere to create special events as a much-needed respite for caregivers – in conjunction with sponsor Tim Horton’s and producer/co-director Katherine Siemens’ Dreaming Elephant Studio.
The play, which imagines a 1932 live radio broadcast of two back-to-back episodes, The Case of the Chinese Bracelet and The Case of the Phantom Zeppelin, culled from the exploits of an ace private investigator, features well-known film, stage and television actors Mike Roberds, Melia McClure, Marina Lazzarotto, Michael Broderick, Roger Currie, Tom Saunders, Russel Chartrand and Graham Hiscocks.
The cast aims to present the show in authentic style, with “versatile actors, script in hand, using a variety of different voices to create a myriad of characters,” Browne stated in a release.
The performance will take place at First United Church, 15385 Semiahmoo Ave., in the downstairs hall, with a special 4:30 p.m. pre-show reception and nominal ticket price of $2 for caregivers.
Cost for the general public is $12, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the show beginning at 6 p.m.
