Talk about art that ‘talks’

Chigiri-e' artist Roxsane Tiernan to speak at Surrey Art Gallery April 7.

Next week, as part of the Thursday Artist Talk speaker series at the Surrey Art Gallery, artist Roxsane Tiernan will reveal how she creates mixed media pieces that talk.

While in Japan in the 1980ā€™s, Tiernan was introduced to Chigiri-eā€™ā€“ a Japanese torn paper technique.

As an artist, the discovery of Chigiri-eā€™ opened her creative channels, and she revels in all its aspects, including the variety of papers, and their texture and appearance (sturdy or fragile, bright or hazy, fibrous or sheer).

Before learning Chigiri-e’, Tiernan studied and produced weaving, fabric design and soft sculpture. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections locally, nationally, and internationally.

The talk takes place at the Surrey Art Gallery, 13750 88 Ave., April 7, 7:30 p.m. There will be time for questions and conversation and the event concludes by 9 p.m. Admission is free.
