A new art exhibition titled Symphony of Texture and Colour, will feature a selection of 15 unique textile art pieces created by Mission artist Judith (Judy) Hurley, who manipulates fabrics, in conventional and unconventional ways to create beautiful pictures.
Thread, stitches and beads are added to emphasis and embellish the surface of woven fabric panels. Hand and machine stitching techniques are used with small beads clustered to create highlights and shadows.
Hurley loves texture and colour and changes the appearance of synthetic fabrics by, burning, creasing, stitching, wrapping, clamping and embellishing their surface to create a variety of textures.
She then uses these fabrics as the inspiration and materials with which to create pictures and panels, as a traditional artist would use paint, a sculptor stone or wood and potter clay.
The inspiration for her artwork comes from the fabrics created; each picture has its own theme, which develops as the piece progresses and the title added when complete.
The size of the pictures range from the smallest, 20″ x 20″ to the largest 42″ x 32″ most are professionally framed and are available for purchase.
The exhibition is on now and runs until Feb. 27 at the Rock Family Gallery (33529 First Ave.) in Mission.
The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.
