TGIF: Concert listings and events in the South Okanagan

Concerts, theatre, comedy and more in the TGIF round-up of events in Penticton and the South Okanagan.

Concerts

Jan. 23-24 — Ben Waters the boogie woogie piano player from the UK is at the Dream Cafe.

Jan. 28 — Grandmothers for Africa fundraiser presents Johnny Cash Tribute Show as performed by Gary Kehoe and special guest Neil Convey. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Penticton Lakeside Resort. Show is at 7:30 p.m. at the Barking Parrot. Dinner reservations available.

Jan. 30 — The 557 Artist Block presents Justin Koshman and special guest for an intimate evening of acoustic Canadian roots and blues inspired folk music. Show is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 presales.

Feb. 4-5 — Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars at the Dream Cafe.

Feb. 5-7 — Masterworks Ensemble Early Music concert featuring Tracy Fehr (soprano), Elizabeth Lupton (violin), Dennis Nordlund (piano), Olivia Walsh (cello) and Bob Park (guitar). Early music from the Renaissance to early classical at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Summerland on Feb. 5, Concordia Lutheran Church in Penticton on Feb. 6 and Oliver Lutheran Centre on Feb. 7. Tickets are $25 and $15 for students under 18. Tickets are available at the Penticton and District Arts Council (220 Manor Park Ave.) or at the door.

Feb. 5 — George Canyon performs at The Mule Nightclub on his Jekyll and Nothing to Hide tour. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketweb.ca.

Feb. 10 — Critically acclaimed guitar player Jeff Lang is performing at the Dream Cafe.

Feb. 6 — The Penticton Secondary Music Department will present Canadian Juno Award winner and American Music Award winner Alfie Zappacosta for a special concert at 8 p.m. at the Shatford Centre. Three local musicans will be featured in the concert which will benefit the students of Penticton Secondary Music Department. Pen High students will provide some pre-concert entertainment beginning at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available at the Shatford, at the door, or online at www.offrampjazz.com.

Feb. 11 — Bonnie Killroe at Osoyoos Community Theatre. Tickets are $23 in advance or $25 at the door.

Feb. 12 — Stephen Fearing reaches hearts and minds through his exquisitely wrought lyrics and music at the Dream Cafe.

Feb. 13 — The Okanagan Symphony Orchestra presents Heroes and Heroines from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Cleland Theatre, with special guests the OS Youth Orchestra and James Campbell, one of the world’s foremost clarinetists as they juxtapose the classics with jazz.

Feb. 19 — Country musician Kip Moore will perform at the SOEC. Tickets available at the SOEC box office and valleyfirsttix.com.

Feb. 19 — Award-winning guitarist Joel Fafard performs southern roots and blues at the Dream Cafe.

Feb. 25 — Bandidos Cerveza Rides Again, the 22-piece symphonic classic rock band performs at the Cleland Theatre. Show is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets available at bandidoscerveza.com.

Feb. 26 — Jack Semple performs at the Dream Cafe.

Feb. 27 — Laura Smith’s distinct singing voice has been a mainstay of the Canadian music scene for many decades. She is performing at the Dream Cafe.

Events

Jan. 20- 23 — Broadway Musicals in Concert by Soundstage Production at the Penticton Lakeside Resort. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. with a matinee at 1 p.m. added on Jan. 23. Tickets available at the Lakeside front desk.

Jan. 21 —Kitchen Stove Film present Jimmy’s Hall. Single tickets are $13 at the Penticton Art Gallery or The Book Shop, $15 at the theatre before each screening. Showtimes at the Landmark Cinema 7 are 1, 4 and 7 p.m.

Jan. 21 to 23— South Okanagan Actors and Players present Noises Off, a slapstick comedy by Michael Frayn. Jan. 21 and Jan. 22 shows are at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Venables Theatre. Matinee on Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. Information and ticket booking at info@soplayers.ca or 250-495-2776.

Jan. 23 — Royal Canadian Legion hosts a Robbie Burns Supper from 5 to 10 p.m.. Commemorating the Scottish poet, the evening will consist of dinner, bagpiping and dancing. Tickets are $30, all-ages event.

Jan. 27 — Topics and Tea at the Penticton Art Gallery from 2 to 3 p.m. Featuring Ron Marsh: Travelogue of the Athabaska. Free event.

Feb. 2-25 — Oliver Sagebrushers Art Group, with approximately 50 members of different mediums and techniques, are guest artists at the Front Street Gallery. on Feb. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is the vernissage opening. The gallery will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the show dates. Artist opening event is on Feb. 6 from noon to 3 p.m.

Feb. 4 — Snowed In Comedy Tour featuring Paul Myrehaug, Craig Campbell, Dan Quinn and Pete Zedlacher. Show is at the Cleland Community Theatre at 8:30 p.m. Tickets available at the community centre or www.snowedincomedytour.com.

Feb. 4 to 27 — Many Hats Theatre Company presents Baggage by Sam Bobrick. Shows are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets at the Wine Country Visitor Centre or reserve by phone at 250-276-2170.
