Chilliwack indie folk band The Crescent Sky holds an album release party and concert on Saturday, Sept. 11 with Abbotsford musician Ben Cottrill.
The backyard concert begins at 7 p.m. at 6055 Ross Rd. at Ryder Lake in Chilliwack, starting with Cottrill.
Cottrill released two EPs in 2020: Velvet Regrets Vol. 1 and 2. The first volume included a 15-minute film.
Later this month he will play the Vancouver Shipyards Festival and in October will open a sold-out show for Victoria Folk-Rock band Jon and Roy.
Cottrill, who plays multiple instruments, has many years of busking, touring and songwriting under his belt. His first break came with a spot in the Canada’s Walk of Fame Emerging Artists’ Program in 2015, when he was named among seven winners selected from 300 submissions.

He also earned a Fraser Valley Music Award nomination in 2017.
Cottrill competed in 2019 on the CTV music series The Launch, where he vied for a chance to record an original song under the mentorship of Vancouver legend Bryan Adams, Quebec pop star Marie Mai, and Scott Borchetta, the music industry icon who discovered Taylor Swift.
Cottrill did not win, but he described the experience as a “brilliant foray into the mainstream music and media business.”
The Crescent Sky pairs classic folk-group purity with a modern edge. In 2018, they received the Abbotsford Arts Council’s Emerging Emerging Artist Award, nominations in the Fraser Valley Music Awards, and a placement in the top 100 of CBC’s 2019 Searchlight contest.
This year, they were selected as one of the BreakoutWest Spotlight Showcase artists for the Folk Alliance International virtual conference.
Tickets for the backyard concert are available at eventbrite.ca (search “The Crescent Sky Album Release Concert.”)
