The competition was part of a lineup of bacon-related events between the two businesses for Griz Days.

“We wanted to be get involved in Griz Days but didn’t know what to do,” said Julie Olinik, co-organizer of the Bacon Spectacular events. “The plan was always to roast a pig and band the Northern and Board Stiff together. So from the pig, came the idea of bacon.”

Most of the contributors to the Best Bacon Drink/Dish competition were local businesses, according to Olinik, but a few contributions from local individuals were also among the entries.

The dishes and drinks were scored in different categories including Best Presentation, Most Amount of Bacon, Best Dessert, Best Single Strip and the overall winner, which was awarded to the waffle dessert creation from The Livery.

Other notable entries included duck and bacon rolls, a Thai-inspired noodle dish, a bacon cocktail with maple syrup and kahlua and a bacon cheesecake, which used an entire pound of bacon in its filling and topping.

Winners in each category were presented with gift cards to the Northern and Board Stiff along with plaques.

A charity breakfast with pancakes, sausage and, of course, bacon preceded the drink and dish competition that morning with money going towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Later in the afternoon, competitors took part in a three-pound bacon eating competition.
