Club 240

The Crescent Legion’s Club 240 (2643 128 St.) continues to provide the venue for successful Friday night dances organized by the Semiahmoo Music Consortium.

The music will be back Sept. 8 (doors, 7 p.m, show 8 p.m.) with ever-popular Bobby ‘Nearly Neil’ Bruce and his tribute to the enduring music and style of Neil Diamond.

On Sept. 15, it will be the turn of guitarist Rob Montgomery‘s band Incognito, featuring the dynamic lead vocals of Amanda Dean, the piano and Hammond B3 of Steve Werbicki, the bass of David Barton and drums of Darrell Mayes.

Sept. 22, Blue Voodoo will be back to rock the house with the dual guitar lead of Ted Tosoff and Rick Dalgarno, ably backed by Gary Berg on bass and John McCreath on drums.

Canada 150 show

The City of White Rock, Semiahmoo Arts and Canada 150 are co-presenting two exhibits this summer highlighting both established and emerging artists, curated by Melanie Watts.

The second exhibit, Our Future, runs until Sept. 16 at the Pop-Uptown Gallery, 1459 B Johnston Rd.

It features new work by Debbie Westergaard Tuepah with Roxanne Charles, plus work by Christine Leviczky-Riek, Diane Roy, Tom Douglas, Bev Ellis, Robert Wakefield, Mallory Donen, Molly Gray, Uryel Cho, Tony Wilson, Chrystal Johnston, Linda Bickerton-Ross, Brandy McLean, Rachel Kirkpatrick, YoungHwa Cha Hach, Lesley Tannen, Jevon Greco and Frazer Cole.

Subtitled Sagas, Narratives – and Selfies, the exhibits began with the Our Past exhibition, which is still running at White Rock Community Centre, 15154 Russell Ave.

Among special events planned for the Pop-Uptown show is a showcase of new work by textile artist Gloria Villamil (Sept. 9-10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.); and a ‘plant pounding’ workshop with Bobbie Hammersley (Sept. 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m., $10, pre-registration required at 604-536-8333).

Closing reception Sept. 16, 7-9 p.m. will include live music, storytelling and light refreshments. The new exhibit is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Traditional jazz

There will be no live Dixieland and swing music for dancing at the Crescent Legion Branch’s Club 240 (2643 128 St.) on Sunday, Sept. 10 – the last day of the Pentastic Jazz Fest in Penticton.

The White Rock Traditional Jazz Society (featuring youth bands through September) will be back to its regular 2-5 p.m. Sunday sessions on Sept. 17, however, with the Curbside Trad Jazz Band, featuring clarinetist Ben MacCrae.

McCrae will be back the week following (Sept. 24) when the music will be provided by his New Orleans and Chicago-style band Benny and the Good Men, featuring special guest Rice Honeywell.

Coming up on Oct. 8 will be reedman Gerry Green‘s Crescent City Jazzers, featuring Jim Armstrong (trumpet), Ron Minshall (trombone), Bill Dixon (banjo), Dave Brown (bass) and Nick James (drums).

Admission is $10 (WRTJS members), $12 (non members) and $6 (students with ID).

Seaside shindig

Legion of Sound will host the Seaside Shindig Sept. 30 at Star of the Sea Hall (15262 Pacific Ave.), a fundraiser to help create concerts for emerging indie artists.

The event will feature three live bands plus a DJ, with a Texas BBQ dinner by Railtown Catering, full bar and craft beer.

Headlining will be Vancouver-based Coco Jafro, a dynamic band that combines the powerful voice of Karina Morin with a unique mix of jazz, reggae, funk and more. Semiahmoo Peninsula indie band The Escapes will also be featured.

West Fine Art Show

This year’s late summer edition of the West Fine Art Show – of continuing interest to art lovers in the Surrey-Langley area, will take place at the Glass House Estate Winery, 23449 0 Ave., Langley, Saturday, Sept. 9, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 10, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gospel sing-a-long

Hazelmere United Church is offering an evening of spiritually-uplifting music in an eminently suitable setting.

The historic Hazelmere Valley church will host a gospel sing-a-long on Sunday, Sept. 17 featuring the stirring vocal talents of guest performer Lori Barnson.

The event takes place at 7 p.m. at the church (1614 184 St.); doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is by donation.

Blue Frog

Musicians noted both locally and internationally continue to enliven the program at White Rock’s Blue Frog Studios.

Upcoming shows include Angel Forrest with Denis Coulombe and Ricky Paquette Sept. 8-9.

With a career spanning 27 years and nine albums – and Maple Blues awards for Female Vocalist of the Year in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 – Quebec blues belter Forrest added even more prestige to her resumé with the success of last year’s album, Angel’s 11, including two more Maple Blues Awards, for Songwriter of the Year and Recording of the Year.

Also coming up is an evening with famed singer/actor Jane Mortifee and Friends (Saturday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m.).

In a 40-year career in theatre, film, television and recording, Mortifee has been nominated for an Actra award and three Jessie awards, and was inducted into the B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame in 2002.

She will be accompanied by three of Vancouver’s most accomplished and versatile musicians: Bill Sample, David Sinclair and Rene Worst.

Naked Stage

The next reader’s theatre presentation by Naked Stage at Newton Cultural Centre (13530 72 Ave.) will be the acclaimed dramatic comedy Poor Richard, by Jean Kerr, Sept. 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.

The play, directed by Ed Milaney, reunites four members of the cast of Naked Stage’s debut production, Any Wednesday: Deanna Gray, Croy Jenkins and George Stone, plus newcomer to the company Diane Jameson.

By the author of Please Don’t Eat The Daisies, Poor Richard concerns a newly-widowed poet from England who has been invited to the U.S. to attend a dedication ceremony for his late wife.

His publisher has provided him with a secretary, but he soon discovers she has more than secretarial duties on her mind.

Peace Arch Chorus

The harmony-singing women of the Peace Arch Chorus (Sweet Adelines) will be showcased at Cloverdale Market on Saturday, Sept. 16, 10:30 a.m.
