Vancouver Island University theatre students won’t let a strike stop them from presenting an extra-curricular play in Nanaimo.
The students initially decided to stage the play Wedgie on the picket line today (March 31) at 5 p.m. after losing use of the university’s theatre because of the strike. The students will also stage the play at John Barsby community school Friday and Saturday (April 1-2).
Wedgie, written by Jason Patrick Rothery, is a story about Anderson Elementary School and its playground war with Jacob’s Junior High. The confusion of preteen years is presented through the struggles of war and rampant bullying, losing friends as adulthood approaches and how a movie can define a childhood.
The students aim to use what they learned in theatre classes in the project by making an event which will aid the community with its message.
All proceeds of the show will be divided between the Mike Monych Scholarship Fund and the children and students of FARKWA Secondary School in Tanzania.
The play starts at 8 p.m. at John Barsby. Tickets are $12; $10/students and seniors. For more information, please call 250-616-2745.
