It was to be the first major dramatic production in the new theatre in the Revelstoke Secondary School, but an unfortunate fire at a suppliers’ warehouse has led to the cancellation of the musical.
Revelstoke Theatre Company vice chair Martin Ralph confirmed in an email late Monday night that the theatre company’s production of The Sound of Music has been cancelled.
Some cast and crew members had known for a couple of weeks that the upholstery for the seats in the new theatre went up in flames in a warehouse fire in Mexico just before Christmas. The delay has set back the completion of the theatre so much that the March production is no longer possible. “The construction company has explored all other alternatives and has had to re-issue the order, resulting in the delay,” Ralph said in an email. “The theatre chairs are tied to the ventilation system and acoustics and we could not be in the theatre prior to the full completion of all work. The date of occupancy has not been confirmed at this point.”
Ralph said other options such as a new venue or postponement were explored. “At this time, the best option seems to be to announce The Sound of Music has been cancelled.”
Revelstoke Theatre Company executive and directors will be meeting soon to make plans and prepare for the fall 2012/13 season.
In his email, Ralph thanked those involved in the production. “My deepest thanks for everything you have done to bring this show to life, and foster the spirit of community theatre and performing arts in Revelstoke,” he wrote.
