Three concerts in two weeks at Bozzini’s Upstairs Lounge in Chilliwack

Jon Brooks and Lynne Hanson are up first, followed by WiL and then Dan Bern for February concerts

It’ll be three different concerts in two weeks featuring artists from all over North America next month at Bozzini’s Upstairs Lounge.

“Normally we don’t group shows so close together but when you get such an opportunity to present old favourites as well as introduce phenomenal new acts to Chilliwack, you do it,” artistic director Emmanuel Asprakis said.

First up will be the double bill of Jon Brooks and Lynne Hanson on Thursday, Feb. 6.

“If you love singer-songwriters, then we have the two the finest in Canada for one great night,” Asprakis said.

Brooks, making his fourth visit to Bozzini’s, will be accompanied as per usual by Neil Cruikshank (of Brickhouse). Hanson will be making her debut at Bozzini’s that night.

Hanson is known for her hard-living style of music, mixing gritty ballads with driving roots-tinged guitar. Her deep bluesy croon is pure and full of fortitude, and she’s drawn comparisons to Lucinda Williams, with a touch of Gillian Welch thrown in.

She received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination in 2009 and won the prestigious Colleen Peterson Song writing Award in 2010. She is a two-time Canadian Folk Music Award winner (2018 English Songwriter, Ensemble of the Year with The LYNNeS), a two-time Indie Acoustic Project Alt-Country album of the year winner (River of Sand 2014, Uneven Ground 2017), a past winner of the Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award, and a two-time finalist in the prestigious Kerrville New Folk competition in Texas.

Jon Brooks and Lynne Hanson perform Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.). Tickets $22.50.

Then on Sunday, Feb. 16, WiL returns for one night accompanied by the mighty Keith Gallant on drums. His high energy shows always sell out.

WiL performs Sunday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.). Tickets $30.

Lastly, Feb. 17 will mark the Chilliwack debut of California native Dan Bern.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter is touring the U.S., Canada and Europe in 2020 in support of his new release Regent Street.

After losing two fingertips from an accident with a snow blower in March 2018, Bern found himself unable to play guitar for nearly a year. Turning to the piano, he found fresh perspective which led to Regent Street, a collection of 11 songs that reach new artistic heights.

The title track and lead single was previously recorded by Roger Daltrey, a fan of Bern’s work, after Bern sent The Who singer a demo. “Regent Street” was recorded for this album in a style inspired by Daltrey’s version, and Bern considers it a cover of his own song. Passionate, energetic and poignant, Regent Street is a stand-out album in Bern’s impressive discography.

While Bern may be best-known for his masterpieces Jerusalem, Marilyn, and Tiger Woods, he has released 25 albums and EPs, and played thousands of shows across North America and Europe. He is a captivating live performer with a loyal, multi-generational following.

Dan Bern (with special guest Orit Shimoni) performs Monday, Feb. 17 (Family Day) at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.). Tickets $20.

Tickets for all shows can be purchased at Bozzini’s, or call 604-792-0744 to reserve by phone. Visit bozzinisrestaurant.ca for more details.
