1. The passionate young actors of Betty Huff Theatre Company are back on stage next week, this time with “Aladdin Jr.” The Disney tale is told at the Whalley-area elementary school from Monday to Thursday (April 11 to 14, at 7 p.m. nightly). Since 2002, the school theatre company has staged a wide variety of fun, kid-friendly plays. Look for updates at Twitter.com/BHuffTheatre, and head on over to 13055 Huntley Ave., Surrey. Tickets for the show are just $6 via the school office (604-585-3104) and also on the ambitious theatre company’s website (Bettyhufftheatre.ca).
2. Write a poem, get free coffee (or tea or pop). Basically, that’s the promo offered by Newton Espresso Café in April, in celebration of National Poetry Month. Poems can be on any theme and in any format, but organizers encourage submissions on the themes of “Coffee & Cafés” – and all works must be original. Selected poems will be published in the monthly Cedar Bark ’Zine poetry publication. More details are posted at Friendsofthegrove.ca. The coffee shop is located at 7330 137th St.
3. Surrey Art Gallery will be abuzz this weekend with the opening of two new exhibits. Toronto-based artist Nep Sidhu, who once worked as a welder, celebrates his first solo exhibit with “Shadows in the Major Seventh,” which combines metal sculpture, textile design and early Arabic calligraphy. A separate gallery space showcases the interactive photography of Vancouver-area artist Paulo Majano, whose scenes of people enjoying recreation time contain a latent or hidden image. Check it out in person at 13750 88th Avenue or online at Surrey.ca/artgallery.
