THREE THINGS TO DO in Surrey: Another Color Me Rad run, talk about landscapes and walk through Glades Garden

A weekly guide to some go-to events happening in Surrey and area

1. An explosion of pink, yellow, green, blue and violet powders will cover sweaty joggers (and walkers) during another Color Me Rad 5K run at Cloverdale Fairgrounds on Saturday (June 3), starting at 10 a.m. The last-minute $55 registration fee comes with race T-shirt, RAD tattoo, a colour pack and a pair of sunglasses. Details are posted at colormerad.com/surrey.

2. White Rock-based artist Georgina Johnstone will outline the basic steps to painting a landscape at the next SAGA Thursday Artist Talk, on Thursday, June 1 starting at 7:30 p.m. At Surrey Art Gallery, Johnstone will demonstrate her method using her own photo as a reference, in a conversation about toning, layout, colours and more. “As in the adage, ‘The longest journey begins with the first step,’ the journey to the creation of a painting begins with the first brushstroke,” she says. For info, call 604-501-5566 or vist surrey.ca/artgallery.

3. In South Surrey, take a walk through the wonderful Glades Garden – home to many species of rare and unusual rhododendrons, azaleas, and fine heritage trees – during a rare open house on Saturday (June 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The woodland garden is located at 561 172nd St. with visitor parking available south of the main garden gate. Note: pets aren’t welcome at this event.
