THREE THINGS TO DO in Surrey: ‘Elvis’ music, teen drama and ‘The First 100 Days of Trump’ biz talk

A guide to some go-to events happening in Surrey this week

Vegas-based entertainer Donny Edwards returns to Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre this week.

Vegas-based entertainer Donny Edwards returns to Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre this week.

1. Donny Edwards’ mama recalls how he tried to dance to Elvis’ records even before he could walk – and it really makes sense, given the career he’s carved as an acclaimed impersonator. On Friday (Feb. 3), the Vegas-based Edwards (pictured) returns to Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre with “The King: A Musical Tribute to Elvis,” a concert performed with a band called The Cadillac Kings, featuring the Uptown Hornz. And that’s alright, mama! Tickets for the touring show are $46.25 via 604-507-6355 or Bellperformingartscentre.com.

2. Some heavy drama hits Surrey Arts Centre’s Studio Theatre this weekend during stagings of “Concord Floral,” a Dora Award-winning play about teens who find refuge in an abandoned greenhouse during a plague. Local teens, including Surrey’s Brianna Clark, star in the show, which concludes a tri-city tour of the Lower Mainland in Surrey on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 3 and 4, 7:30 p.m. nightly). The play, which comes with a warning of strong language and mature themes, is presented by Surrey Civic Theatres, in partnership with PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Touchstone Theatre. Visit 604-501-5566 or click Tickets.surrey.ca for details.

3. At the Sheraton hotel in Guildford next Thursday (Feb. 9), a luncheon called “The First 100 Days of Trump” will take a closer look at the impact of U.S. government policies on local businesses. The annual “economic forecast” event, hosted by Surrey Board of Trade, will feature moderator Kirk LaPointe (Business in Vancouver) and panelists Chris Jacobs (Opportunity Northwest), Mike Holden (Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters), Robert Levy (Border Gold Corp., CKNW) and Stephen Murphy (Canadian Western Bank). Tickets ($50) are available by calling 604-581-7130, or visit Businessinsurrey.com.
