Three Things to Do This Week (for July 30, Surrey and Delta)

1. One of my favourite animated movies, the video game adventure “Wreck-It Ralph,” kicks off the Movies Under the Stars series at Holland Park this Saturday (Aug. 1). Five fun films are part of the month-long series, hosted by the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, and it’s free for all who show up at the park, at 13428 Old Yale Rd., Surrey. Each movie begins at dusk, but people should arrive at 5 p.m. for food, family-friendly activities and performances by local entertainers. For more details, visit Downtownsurreybia.com or call 604-580-2321.

2. Have a hankerin’ for Ukrainian “soul food”? Freezer-ready portions of perogies, cabbage rolls and borscht are available for sale Friday (July 31) in Whalley during another month-end fundraiser at Ukrainian Cultural Centre, 13512 108th Ave., Surrey, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Since 1955, the centre has put on a perogy supper to raise money for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary next door. For more details, call 604-531-1923 or 604-581-0313.

3. Surrey resident Aman Johal is the lead organizer of Brigade Days, which takes place this weekend (Aug. 1 to 3) at Fort Langley National Historic Site. Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the B.C. Day celebration will have history re-enactors swapping stories, playing music and even firing muskets. The weekend highlight will be the the “Arrival of the Fur Brigades” canoe re-enactment, at 1 p.m. Monday; that night, Langley Community School Fiddlers and Swing Patrol perform a concert (doors open at 6 p.m.). Johal, by the way, will be among the costumed interpreters at the event. Look for event info at Facebook.com/FortLangleyNHS.
