Three Things to Do This Week (June 18-24)

1. Fun at Surrey Fest Downtown: Up to 7,000 people are expected at Surrey Fest Downtown, the free event put on by Whalley Community Association in partnership with the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association. This year’s shindig, the 17th annual, is set for Saturday, June 20 at Central City Plaza and North Surrey Rec Centre (13450 102nd Ave.). The entertainment starts at 11 a.m. with Arium and doesn’t stop until the upbeat John Welsh Band caps its set at 6 p.m., with Chris Hamilton, Will Stroet, That DAM Band (on loan from the Giggle Dam dinner-theatre hangout in Port Coquitlam) and Double Shotzz also booked to perform. For more details, visit Surreyfest.com or call the BIA, 604-580-2321.

2. Dinner at another Long, Long Table: The Downtown Surrey BIA also gets busy this week with its second annual Long, Long Table dinner event, a “friend-raiser” for 250 guests at Surrey City Hall Plaza. Involved is a five-course meal served with the theme of “Canada, coast to coast,” on Tuesday, June 23. Tickets are $35 via the BIA’s office (#330-10362 King George Blvd., 604-580-2321). While you’re at it, consider the $150-a-plate delights of “Soiree en Blanc,” another dinner event (this one a fundraiser for Surrey Libraries) to be held at city hall’s plaza, this time on Saturday, July 11. Check it out online at Surreysoiree.ca.

3. "Arts at Darts": As spring fades into summer, a cool place to chill out this Saturday (June 20) will be Darts Hill Garden Park for the facility’s annual “Arts at Darts” event. An eclectic mix of 20 solo artists and groups will have their works on display (and for sale) at the annual gathering, including B.C Bonsai Society, Robert Gary Parkes’ Loafing Shed Glass Studio, Brass Band Art Group, Crescent Beach Photography Club and more. Authors will entertain with readings, and live music will fill the air. And yes, there will be a beverage garden. The event runs from 4 to 8 p.m. at 1633 170th St., South Surrey.
