Here at the Oak Bay library, we love to read but sometimes a good television series is just the ticket. Answering a question we often receive, here are some recommended British mystery series, held by GVPL.

The Accused: One by one, defendants are led into court to face their fate. Are they innocent or guilty? Will the jury make the right decision? A tense and exciting British series.

The Bletchley Circle Four women who worked as codebreakers at Bletchley Park have taken up civilian lives and decide to use their skills to track down killers.

Broadchurch: An outstanding police procedural. The first season focuses on the effects of fear, grief and suspicion on a town of the death of an 11-year-old  boy. Each season features a different murder.

Father Brown: GK Chesterton’s beloved character, Father Brown, is featured in this charming BBC series starring Mark Williams (Harry Potter, Doctor Who). Father Brown brings warmth, intellect and humour to this new take on a classic genre.

Foyle’s War: The charming English Detective Christopher Foyle solves crimes on the home front while he reluctantly sits out the Second World War.

Inspector Lynley: Uppercrust Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, and his working class partner Sergeant Barbara Havers overcome their differences and evolve into an effective team to unravel the most heinous crimes.

Inspector Morse: Based on a character by Colin Dexter, the series follows an Oxford-educated police detective and his assistant solving murder cases in Oxford. Very likeable main character.

Inspector Lewis: A sequel to Inspector Morse and rated as superbly enjoyable.

Midsomer Murders: In this lighthearted show, a police duo solve murders in the quirky English countryside.

Vera: A female detective and her assistant solve murders in Northumberland. Considered a favourite.
