Trombone quintet stops in Penticton

Two very different sets of musicians will be coming together for an evening of music at the Shatford Centre next month, contrasting the music of a local singer-songwriter with the performance of a trombonist ensemble on a cross-Canada tour.

Ari Neufeld will open the evening on May 2. A one-man band, playing guitar while singing and keeping time through an amplified stomp box. His performance covers a variety of genres from folk to pop, to new country, to rhythmic soul, to rock.

Following Neufeld’s performance, the music and character of the evening change dramatically as I Tromboni, a quintet of trombonists, take to the stage to entertain the audience, combining arrangements of both well-known and new music with stylish and often humorous delivery. The group incorporates music of many genres into their performances including baroque, classical, jazz, romantic, contemporary and popular styles.

The Shatford Music and Arts Committee was able to bring I Tromboni to Penticton through Jeunesses Musicales of Canada and their Join the Movement project, which aims to democratize classical music while decreasing social isolation, inviting Canadian youth to join together, forming a network of music presenters.

The Shatford Centre team set up a committee of young volunteers under the age of 30 — the project’s target audience — who are responsible for every aspect of the concert logistics.

I Tromboni will be giving a preview of their musical act on the front steps of the Shatford Centre at noon on May 2 to promote the evening concert.
