They’re the foundation of the band and the audience is the first to notice if they make a mistake.
Bass in symphonic and jazz bands is a lonely post, often attracting just one or two students per year. But bass players are getting a little more attention, thanks to this year’s JazzFest.
The annual fundraiser, which features music students from John Barsby, Woodlands and Wellington secondary schools, always features a professional musician who performs with the students and hosts educational workshops. This year, it’s bass player Jodi Proznick.
Roseanna Kent, Maddy Thomas and Jarrit Morpak play bass for Woodlands, Barsby and Wellington, respectively.
“My dad played bass for like, 20 years, so I just picked up his and went from there,” Morpak said.
The choice was similar for Kent, whose father played bass, but for Thomas decided on a whim.
“I just randomly blurted out that instrument,” she said.
All three are happy with their choice, which puts them in a small spotlight amongst the dozens of other students on stage.
“It puts some pressure on you because you’re the foundation of the band,” Thomas said.
Woodlands music teacher, Rick Becker, who is also a bass player, said mistakes from the rhythm section are easier to spot.
“Wrong notes don’t show up as much as wrong rhythm,” Becker said.
The students will get tips from Proznick, who will be leading workshops with the students and performing with them at JazzFest.
Kent, Thomas and Morpak all saw JazzFest while in elementary school, not really believing that one day they, too, would play on that stage.
“I like playing for the kids,” Kent said. “It sounds so amazing when you’re little.”
Their experience in the music program ensures music will always be part of their lives, with Thomas pursuing the music educator course at the University of Victoria upon graduation.
“I spend most of my day in the bandroom at school,” Thomas said.
JazzFest is set for Friday (Feb. 11) at 7 p.m. at the Port Theatre. Tickets $10. Please call 250-754-8550 for more information.
