Twilight concert series returns to Mission

Fraser River Heritage Park will host performances every Wednesday and Friday night, starting June 3.

Fraser River Heritage Park will come alive with the sound of music as the 25th season of the  Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series is set to begin.

The concerts feature a variety of musical talent with an eclectic mix of musical genres ranging from barbershop, rock and folk, to Celtic and high-school big-band.

On Wednesday and Friday evenings – from 7 to 8 p.m. – from June 3 to August 28, Mission residents will have an opportunity to hear a range of live music at Fraser River Heritage Park.

Kicking off this year’s series is the Hatzic Secondary School Jazz Band and Affirmation Jazz Choir on Wednesday, June 3 from 7 to 8 p.m.

The band won silver in May at the World Strides Heritage Music Festival in Anaheim, California, while Affirmation took home a gold.  This talented, young group will begin this year’s series with a high-energy mix of eclectic music and infectious enthusiasm.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner or treat themselves to a special pre-concert meal at the Blackberry Kitchen or The Log Cabin Café.

Admission to the concerts is by donation.

On Friday, June 5 from 7 to 8pm there will be a performance by Robert Bateman Secondary School’s Jazz Band.

This will be the Bateman band program’s first appearance at the Twilight Concert Series, though they are no strangers to the stage.  They perform regularly in the Fraser Valley, and in April travelled to SunPeaks for the Cantando Festival, where the Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Concert Choir all earned silver ratings for their performances.

Then, on June 10, Heritage Park Secondary School bands will perform.

Fresh from a season of great music and award-winning performances, this band program is ready to show its stuff on the summer series stage. Under the direction of Kim Grant, the concert and guitar bands have travelled about the province this year, and they are happy to be hitting the stage at home.

Concert-goers will also have the opportunity to take part in Envision Financial’s Full Cupboard program and support St. Joseph’s Food Bank by bringing non-perishable food or cash donations to concert events. To learn more about The Full Cupboard and Full Cupboard nights, visit thefullcupboard.ca
