The West Coast has a lot of skills to show off and its amazing talents deserve an audience.
Ucluelet’s Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Club will provide a venue for locals to show off their abilities this weekend as the Ucluelet Sports and Social Club is hosting its first West Coast talent show. Various tables will be set up inside and outside the club at 1708 Peninsula Road on Dec. 11 for West Coasters to experience their neighbours’ expertise from 1-5 p.m.
“It’s open to any artist that wants to come,” said Brandon Lytle adding the scene will include live music, painters, photographers, and at least one pyrotechnic artist. “It’s showing everybody all the crazy talent this town has to offer.”
Lytle launched the Ucluelet Sports and Social Club in October when he arrived back in Ucluelet after a six year absence.
“I got back in town and got to meet a lot of people right away who helped me get this going,” he said.
“I lived here a long time ago and I always wanted to come back. This is the place I want to be home so I’m trying to make it my home and I want to get to know everybody and help out any way I can.”
He organized drop in softball games during the summer and began helping local businesses promote their events.
“I’ve got a lot of support around town and I just keep doing events at all the different venues to try to keep everyone happy and bring people into the local businesses, especially in winter when everybody’s not going out all the time,” he said.
He said he is currently running a community fantasy hockey league and hopes to get dodgeball tournaments going as well as foosball and pool leagues.
He suggested Ucluelet’s Parks and Recreation department is doing a great job filling calendars for local youth, but could use some help in the 18-40 demographic he hopes his club will cater to.
He plans to start hosting monthly meetings at the ANAF early in the new year and will encourage locals to pitch ideas for community-connecting social-infusers.
“I’m hoping to get more people’s support and more people involved so we can go hard in the summer,” he said.
