The UFV Music Association holds the UFV Music Festival on Saturday, Jan. 25.
The event, featuring amateur and professional classical and jazz groups, runs from 3 to 7:30 p.m. in room B101 at the Abbotsford campus. Admission is by donation, and food will be available for purchase.
The UFV Music Association began when current president Jose Toffoli, treasurer Eric Cho and secretary Dylan Pritchard decided to start a music club because UFV did not have any music groups or classes that ran regularly.
Shortly after, as they started rehearsals for their big band, they were invited to turn the club into an association, with UFV lending them rehearsal space.
The group was then approached by UFV professors Dr. Zoe Dennison and Dr John Pitcher, who loaned them instruments, storage space and support.
The UFV Music Association has also been supported by the music community – for example, by Barbara Crosswell (MAC Symphony director), who donated an entire music library.
The group currently consists of a big band and jazz quintet. They have plans to start a chamber orchestra by the end of the semester.
Those groups, as well as others from the Fraser Valley, will perform at the music festival on Saturday.
