Umbrella decorating contest to raise funds, awareness for Ann Davis Transition Society in Chilliwack

People invited to decorate red umbrellas as part of Umbrellas for Change: The Ann Davis Art Contest

A new umbrella-themed art contest will bring creativity, funds and awareness to one Chilliwack society this summer.

Umbrellas for Change is an online competition for the Ann Davis Transition Society where folks can decorate red umbrellas all while raising money for the organization which provides education, prevention and support services to those affected by abuse or violence.

“By transforming 150 red umbrellas into works of art, Umbrellas for Change aims to raise funds and awareness for those in our community who aspire to transform their lives and live free of abuse,” Ann Davis Transition Society said in the contest announcement.

“This contest also aims to foster creativity and collaboration in the Chilliwack community by bringing people together with a fun activity for a good cause.”

The umbrellas are standard size and have a collapsable handle. The item was chosen because the transition society’s logo is a red umbrella with a heart coming out of the handle.

For $20, people can pick up an umbrella from the office on Young Road from now until Friday, Aug. 7 and bring it home to decorate. Participants will have until Aug. 23 to decorate their umbrellas. After that, images of the finished pieces will be uploaded to an online art gallery where the public will vote for their favourite from Aug. 24 to 30.

There are 150 umbrellas for sale and people can still pick one up after Aug. 7 if there are some available.

Umbrellas for Change: The Ann Davis Art Contest is open to people of all ages. There will be prizes for first, second and third, as well as randomly-selected participation prizes.

For umbrella pick-up and entry information, email redumbrella@anndavis.org or call 604-792-2760. The office is located at 9046 Young Rd. and hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. They take debit, credit and cash.
