Gounod’s ‘Romeo et Juliette’ Live in HD at The Beacon
The fourth in the series of Met: Live in HD opera broadcasts co-presented by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre takes place on Sunday, April 9 at 1 p.m. sharp. Romeo et Juliette is based on Shakespeare’s classic story, with music by French composer Charles Gounod.
Perhaps the most enduringly successful of the many operatic settings of the world’s consummate love story, Roméo et Juliette is an example of French romanticism, a tradition that values subtlety, sensuality, and graceful vocal delivery. Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo are paired as the starcrossed lovers.
When they appeared opposite each other in Manon at the Met in 2015, the New York Times said, “The temperature rises nearly to boiling every time Damrau and Grigolo are on stage together.” In this performance, they return as opera’s classic lovers, in Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation. The production, by director Bartlett Sher, won acclaim for its vivid eighteenth century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the sumptuous score. Watch for our ad in the Lakes District News.
