UPDATE: Local legends told during literacy week

NWCC in Smithers offering free events in recognition of Literacy Week. NEW DATE for luncheon.

Northwest Community College’s Smithers campus is offering a series of events and workshops to celebrate Literacy Week.

Everyone is invited to head to the campus Thursday, Feb. 2 over the noon-hour for the Legendary Literacy Luncheon. Legends written locally will be told. The date has been changed by a week due to the passing of an elder.

Last year people heard legends from Mel Bazil, Donna Holland, Sue Alfred and Ron Austin. Sue Alfred treated everyone by reading her legend, The Pink and Sockeye Salmon, in Wet’suwe’ten while her daughter Dolores Alfred translated the legend to English. Charrine Naziel-Lace displayed her accompanying illustrations. Ron Austin told the legend of The Spider and the Children. You can purchase these books of our local legends by contacting Charrine at chfrog72@gmail.com.

Workshops on moccasin and medicine bag making will also be held. Registration is required for the three Wednesday moccasin lessons. They start on Jan. 25. The medicine bag workshop is on Feb. 15.

People can contact First Nations access coordinator Katie Humphrey at 250-847-4461 ext. 5806 or khumphrey@nwcc.bc.ca for more information.
