Urban abstract photographer Rick Lawrence drives around with a camera by his side just in case he catches a glimpse of something that triggers what he calls an “emotional memory.”
“We all have emotional memory,” the Mill Bay resident said. “It’s kind of the stories that guide our lives. Things that we learned as children … significant experiences or maybe not even significant experiences.”
On Jan. 21 Lawrence will present his work in Nanaimo for the first time as he gives a presentation on abstract photography to the Harbour City Photography Club.
As a student Lawrence was inspired by abstract impressionist painters like Paul Klee and Josef Albers who worked with bold colours and shapes. He also has memories of his father, who took pictures with “fanatical” attention to line and colour.
“I remembered that as a young child I’d see him with a ruler and a pen in his hand,” Lawrence said. “And so a lot of my work is about line and colour and shape, which I see in objects as I get around the city.”
WHAT’S ON … Rick Lawrence presents Urban Abstracts and Other Narratives at St. Andrew’s United Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St., on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
