The Valley Concert Society presents one of America’s finest male vocal ensembles on Tuesday, Nov. 20 in Abbotsford.
Cantus performs at 7:30 p.m. at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way.
The rich harmonies and precise intonation of these eight men are on full display in their a cappella performances. Their engaging stage presence makes them great communicators.
Their program, Alone Together, addresses a variety of contemporary social issues with forthrightness, sensitivity and humour through music from a wide range of eras and genres.
The program is tied together by a multi-movement work based on the poetry of Emily Dickinson and Edna St. Vincent Millay, composed especially for Cantus by Libby Larsen.
Between these movements are songs by the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel.
Beethoven writes about the fragility of life and Saint-Saëns about finding peace.
There is a witty take on Twitter and Arcade Fire’s look at the chess match between Kasparov and IBM’s Deep Blue.
These and many more works fill out the evening.
Tickets are $28 for adults and $15 for students. Visit valleyconcertsociety.com for tickets or more information.
