Vancouver Island Symphony launches new season Saturday

The Vancouver Island Symphony is hosting a Symphony Launch Day Saturday, May 11 at the Nanaimo Airport.

The Vancouver Island Symphony (VIS) is embarking on its 19th season, and it promises to be an exhilarating world tour.

The VIS’s  “Passport to Great Entertainment” will take you on an incredible journey of discovery to some of the most beautiful locations on Earth, as this season’s concerts will include music from as far as Europe and as close as Nanaimo.

To begin the journey, the VIS is hosting a Symphony Launch Day full of fun-filled activities for the whole family this Saturday (May 11) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at — most appropriately — the Nanaimo Airport. The event is free, and it features performances by the VIS musicians, draws every 15 minutes for tickets to concerts and a number of special activities.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., you’ll have a chance to meet Pierre Simard, the VIS’s artistic director and conductor, as he introduces all the concerts for this coming season, from the Popular Pleasures shows such as the Christmas Cirque Spectacular, Movie Music Mania and The Best of the Beatles, to Timeless Treasures with familiar and unexpected symphonic gems from Paris, London, Madrid, Saint Petersburg, and Nanaimo.

Join Aunti Bobbi the Clown for a creative experience making musical instruments and airplanes from recycled materials from 12:30-2 p.m.

From 1:30 p.m. until it’s all gone, the VIS will be offering ice cream as part of the celebration.
