Sanjay Seran said he was “a little apprehensive” to go on tour playing a bunch of fresh material. He said it can take time to figure out the characteristics of a new song.
But Seran, vocalist for Vancouver world fusion band Delhi 2 Dublin, is getting a lot more practice as the group is gradually adding songs from their upcoming 2019 album into their sets.
On Nov. 22, Delhi 2 Dublin – Seran, fiddler Serena Eades and percussionists Tarun Nayar and Ravi Binning on the tabla and dhol, respectively – perform at the Queen’s.
In late September the band released their latest single, Home (Everywhere I Go), a call for unity that starts with the line “I am the son of an immigrant.”
“We’re just calling out a bunch of stuff that we’re seeing in the world right now…” Seran said. “The ability to start a song off with a line like that is pretty powerful and I think it’s just the right time to talk about some of the things that we’re feeling as kids of immigrants growing up here.”
He said the single is more of a pop song, as opposed to the band’s usual party starters, and points to the direction the band is heading on their next album.
“It’s stepping outside of our normal tendencies, so that alone is growth, and adding in the fact that we’re getting a little bit vulnerable and calling some stuff out, but yet still in a Delhi 2 Dublin way,” he said. “Which is with a positive context and really a sense of a uniting message as opposed to a call to action.”
WHAT’S ON … Delhi 2 Dublin performs at the Queen’s on Thursday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance at the venue, online at Ticketzone.com or by calling 250-754-6751.
