Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a cup of tea with the likes of Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins and Joan Plowright?

Join the Vernon Film Society at the Galaxy Theatre on Jan. 9 for Nothing Like a Dame and find out what a privilege it is to spend an unscripted hour or so with these four acting goddesses during their routine visit to Plowright’s home in the English countryside.

As Dench trades stories, often humorous, with her longtime chums, we are reminded of the many characters they have immortalized for generations of audiences. Atkins brings up the subject they all shared – being married to handsome actors and starting careers when none was considered conventionally attractive.

Director Roger Michell has dug up a considerable amount of footage of their early work for stage, screen, and television. Though acclaim has followed the dames throughout their careers, they avoid reading reviews and confess to be shaking inside before every performance.

We feel like an observer in the room, invited to eavesdrop on every priceless nugget shared by his subjects and, although the time with them is brief, the very thought of the world existing in their absence is almost unbearable.

“The assembled dames are so smart, witty, and strong-willed, it’s a wrench to have to part company from them at the end of the film,” wrote the Hollywood Reporter

Nothing Like a Dame screens Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Galaxy Cinemas at the regular times of 5:15 and 7:45 p.m. Tickets are available one week in advance at the Bean Scene for $7. Cash only. Rated PG.
