Vernon singers deliver powerhouse performance

Community Music School's Glee Club production rocks

Vernon’s definitely got talent.

The Community Music School’s Glee Club recently rocked the roof off of Powerhouse Theatre with its Rock of Ages performance.

The show featured local legend Darby Mills (former Headpins lead singer) and equally talented Anita Baturin (Legendary Lake Monsters lead singer). Mills kicked off the performance with Paradise City, then gave Journey a run for their money with Don’t Stop Believing. While protesting rock, yet rockin’ the stage, Baturin was loud and well-loved with Hit Me With Your Best Shot.

Meanwhile the rest of the cast of nearly 20, plus the band of four, gave powerhouse performances both dramatically and vocally, despite some technical issues with the sound and mics during opening night.

Lots of leather, fishnets and denim were sported as the cast took the crowd back to the ’80s with the music that inspired the movie Rock of Ages.

Among those who stood out were Mackenzie Peterson-Hayes, Theresa Beach, Alyssa Goff, Katie Flaherty, Annika Sanderson, Kaarina Schrott, Maya Martselos and Alexander Corzo-Johnstone.

Martselos and Sanderson were among the youngest of the performers, who likely were not even conceived when these songs came out, yet they delivered some of the most powerful melodies.

Injected into the show were a couple of steamy performances by City Dance’s Heather Stranks and Jens Goerner.

And if you weren’t dancing in the aisles or in your seat before, a special treat at the end of the show had almost every one rocking out as Mills performed her smash hit Don’t it Make you Feel.
