The Colour of Music is Gallery Vertigo’s annual juried members exhibition and one of the highlights of the gallery’s year.
It gives local artists in all mediums a chance to show their art in one of the warmest, funkiest art settings in the North Okanagan.
“We have a long history of community support and artistic innovation and this year members asked for a more inclusive jurying process,” explains Gallery Vertigo coordinator Michelle Mitchell. “We’re excited that the show will be juried by three artists working in different mediums and styles.
“It is a way of keeping close to our cultural community partners and bringing their expertise into the gallery.”
Music is one of the broadest and most structured themes in the universe. It reaches from the unfolding mathematics of the Big Bang to the piano études of Chopin, and from the patterning of sunflowers to the calls of lazuli buntings on local hills in the spring.
“We think the theme offers all of our members the chance to unite colour, form and rhythm – and, for the realistic painters and sculptors among us, a chance to portray the many dramatic image possibilities of music – individual musicians, instruments and all the places music is played and made,” says board member Harold Rhenisch. “The range of possibilities is as broad as the human spirit.”
The gallery is seeking submissions of artwork in all forms for The Colour of Music show. Artists need to be members of North Okanagan Artists’ Alternative (NOAA), the group that runs Gallery Vertigo, and can submit up to two artworks, in any medium. Artists who are not yet members of NOAA can sign up for membership at the same time as submitting their artwork.
Gallery Vertigo is accepting submissions from March 24 to April 5 at the gallery located at 3001-31 St. (Suite 1, upstairs). The exhibition runs April 8 to May 3. Opening is April 25 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with appies, beverages and live music. For more information, call 250-503-2297 or email info@galleryvertigo.com.
