Victoria’s Cinevic Society of Independent Filmmakers is taking its annual film festival on tour for the first time, and this weekend it arrives in Nanaimo.
The Short Circuit Pacific Rim Festival features work by filmmakers living in the region. The tour kicked off early November in Dawson City, Yukon and wraps up in Seattle at the end of the month. In some cases directors and actors have attended the screenings.
“It’s bringing the films that we thought were the best of this year and last year’s festival to a wider audience,” Cinevic executive director David Geiss said.
The nine short films being shown were selected by a committee composed of screenwriters, directors, technicians and programmers for other festivals.
Geiss said there is a mix of narrative and documentary films, with films from Vancouver and New Zealand being early fan favourites.
Geiss said the tour is a pilot project, with the intention of increasing its scope in the coming years.
“There are at least tentative plans in the next year or two to possibly do a national tour or eventually do a bit of a tour of the Pacific Rim,” he said. “So this would kind of be a starting point for that.”
