VIDEO: Steps Ahead Dance studio celebrates ‘Our Island’ as students finish season

It's the 16th year of the 'Performing at Home' series presented at the T. Gil Bunch Centre

Steps Ahead Dance studio decided it was time to celebrate Our Island as it presented its 16th year-end extravaganza in its Performing at Home series.

The journey started with a group of students finding they had a two-sailing wait at the ferry before joyfully boarding the boat and making their way to Vancouver Island.

Selections in the first part, performed by ballet and musical movement students, included tributes to the majestic mountains, plus visits to Butchart Gardens to see the flowers, the Empress Hotel for tea, the Symphony for the outdoor Splash event, Cathedral Grove to enjoy the trees, and Coombs to see the goats on the roof at the market. There was even a number that showcased Victoria’s ghosts!

After the intermission, it was time for jazz, modern, hip hop, and tap dancers to show their stuff.

Tasty crabs, soaring eagles, wolves in the wild, outdoor activities, the retirees flocking to Vancouver Island’s pleasant ambience, the famous waves at Tofino, and the naval base at Esquimalt. One number even celebrated construction zones: particularly apt since most of the students and their families live in the south end of the Cowichan Valley.
