Canadian music icon, Valdy is playing the Osborne Bay Pub on Saturday, Oct. 5 in an 8 p.m. show.
A magical, musical evening awaits you.
Paul Valdemar Horsdal, commonly known as Valdy, may hail from Ontario, but all of Canada seems to claim him as one of their own. His solo career began in the early 1970s, known pretty much then as a “folkie”. However, Valdy had a mainstream breakthrough with his hit, “Rock and Roll Song” and since those days, he’s collected two Juno Awards for Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year, and has received seven additional Juno nominations. His 16 albums have achieved sales of nearly half a million copies, four of which are certified gold, which is a lot of sales for someone who never went pop.
Some things you might not know about Valdy:
• Twice was a panelist on Front Page Challenge
• Had a lead role on The Beachcombers, minor roles in two movie features.
• Was invested as a member of the Order of Canada in July 2012
Joining Valdy in this special performance at Crofton are Karel Rossingh and Ryan Tandy.
Roessingh is a composer, arranger, producer and musician who has written scores for more than 500 television episodes, and many award-winning films, documentaries, and promotional videos and recorded and produced many CDs. His latest solo project, Birdsong in the Parkade, was recorded with a Steinway grand piano in a Victoria parkade, with original music based on birdsongs collected across Canada. He has performed with symphony orchestras and rock, jazz, folk, show and country bands throughout the world and even finds time for local politics.
Tandy’s bass playing is inspired by Ray Brown, Christian McBride, and Ken Lister, but the solid time and visible enthusiasm he brings to the bandstand are all his own. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, and raised in Victoria, He’s been a member of Lust Life Jazz Band since 2009 and appears on their CD On Remembrance. In 2012, Ryan joined Nick La Riviere, Art Booker, and Damian Graham in forming New Orleans-inspired funk group The Hi-Fi. An in-demand sideman, the bassist has recently appeared with Maureen Washington, David Vest, Tia Brazda, and Michael Kaeshammer.
Tickets for this show are $25 in advance from Eventbrite or $30 if you get them at the door. Don’t put it off; these seats will sell fast.
