They sold out in November and they’re hoping for another packed house for their concert this Sunday.
Belle Voci, an a capella ensemble, is performing with the Chilliwack Children’s and Youth Choir at St. John’s Anglican Church on Feb. 3.
The last time Belle Voci performed at St. John’s, it was standing room only. Audience members had to sit on the stage behind the singers.
“It was a nice feeling,” says director Paula De Wit.
Their upcoming concert will start with the 20-member children’s choir.
“The children are going to start with a Gregorian chant,” she says.
From there, Belle Voci which features 10 voices — both male and female — will move through the centuries right up to modern music. They’ll be singing mostly sacred music with some secular pieces.
There will be lots of polyphony sung — that’s when two or more independent melodies are sung simultaneously. For Belle Voci, one piece, Lay a Garland, has eight different lines so you’ll hear a beautiful blend of eight voices all singing something different and at the same time.
“It’s amazing. If it’s sung in-tune and right, and if everything lines up just perfectly, it’s magic,” says De Wit. “You can’t compare it to anything.”
One song, Klee Wyck, is by Canadian composer Brian Tate which pays homage to West Coast artist Emily Carr. It will be sung by the children’s choir.
The concert will be one hour long and will feature about 14 songs.
Belle Voci will be in concert with the Chilliwack Children’s and Youth Choir at St. John’s Anglican Church (46098 Higginson Rd.) on Sunday, Feb. 3. Concert is at 6:30 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m.
