Two of the West Coast’s most exceptional musicians, harpist Heidi Krutzen and cellist Ariel Barnes, have formed Couloir, a new and unexpected duo.

Couloir is dedicated to collaboration with Canada’s leading composers, performing modern art music at the highest level of excellence and presenting engaging new music concerts in non-traditional settings.

The result is several wonderful new pieces to be performed on tour in the Kootenays “Three Meditations on Light” by Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock – a profoundly spiritual work, effervescent and glowing, “Drifting Seeds” by American Baljinder Sekhon – a rhythmically exciting work that explores the social and cultural connections between individuals and societies and “A monk, dancing” by Canadian Glenn Buhr which includes chant and music from other cultures following the story of a monk constantly flipping faiths as he finds his way.

Couloir will also be performing their transcription of Debussy’s masterpiece, Sonata originally for cello and piano.

The concert is Monday May 14 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $15 at the Rouge Gallery. For more info call 250 362-9609.
