AESC
The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) has announced two new shows. Vaisakhi 2011 is a concert celebrating the ancient harvest festival in the Punjab region. It takes place on April 23 at 7:30 p.m. The second show is History Makers – The Intervention, which takes place on May 22 at 7:30 p.m. The event provides spiritual training for pre-teens, young adults and leaders. ARTY AWARDS
The Abbotsford Arts Council is accepting nominations for the eighth annual Arty Awards – a night dedicated to recognizing those who have contributed to the local arts community. Nomination forms can be picked up at the Abbotsford Arts Council, 2387 Ware St., or downloaded online at www.abbotsfordartscouncil.org. The deadline for nominations is April 22. The awards take place on May 28 at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way. Tickets are available at the Abbotsford Arts Council box office for $10. BLUE MOON
Elizabeth Bachinsky, who was nominated for the Governor General’s Award for poetry in 2006, will be reading her poetry at the Clearbrook Library, 32320 George Ferguson Way, on April 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The event is part of the Blue Moon Reading Series hosted by the Poets Potpourri Society and the Fraser Valley Regional Library. STRINGS ATTACHED
Strings Attached is an upcoming variety concert by Two Pianos and Violins, featuring light classics and hymn arrangements. Mel Bowker and Johannes Weber will be playing piano while Calvin Dyck, Lorin Friesen and Stan Gubiotti will be on violin. It takes place on April 17 at 7 p.m. at Bakerview Church, 2285 Clearbrook Rd. Singer Cathy Hardy will be performing at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, on April 16 at 7:30 p.m. to promote her new album Love Shines, which is a mix of southern gospel, folk, blues and Celtic.
