Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, better known as the “Royal Couple,” plan to start a fishing charter business on Haida Gwaii.
According to a statement, the couple plans to cater to other royalty, high-ranking government officials and international celebrities. The statement was released on March 25 by the Royal Communications department in London, England and outlines the Royals’ desire to slowly transition to an undisclosed residence on Haida Gwaii where they can manage their fishing charter business while continuing to involve themselves in their various charitable obligations and royal duties.
Although it is unclear whether the couple will reside permanently on the islands, what is clear is that they will be spending the majority of their spring and summer here.
In an interview for BBC news, the Duchess of Cambridge talked about how much their visit to Haida Gwaii had affected them, and specifically, about the personal impact the fishing had on their child, George.
“When William and I reeled in that salmon in Skidgate Inlet, that was a new feeling for us. We felt so in touch with the people of Haida Gwaii, so in touch with nature. George talked about it non-stop all the way back to Buckingham Palace and we knew then that this was our true calling,” said the duchess.
She also went on to say how much the people of Haida Gwaii had influenced their decision. “We were also impressed with the reception we had. I remember, sitting in the new hospital, and my foot innocently brushing against the foot of the local mid-wife on the island and it truly sent sent shivers up my royal spine. I feel a deep need to see her again, she was so tall and blond. Do you have her digits?” gushed Kate.
Unfortunately, there are some international hurdles to clear first and a new landing strip may have to be built to accommodate the Royal carrier and the increased traffic to the islands, but in the statement released, these can be dealt with soon, with no other major obstacles expected.
Some on the islands seem less than impressed with the news though. Said one fishing guide who asked to remain anonymous, “They pulled that salmon in so easily. I’m just worried that they are obviously extremely talented fisherpeople and that they will deplete the salmon stocks for the rest of us. Plus, I’m not sure they understand the challenges associated with living here. Are they aware that if they send mail back to the palace, it’ll take seven months to get there?”
When contacted by the Observer for a comment, the Royal House said that Kate and William are very excited with their new plans and hope to have George enrolled and into his first Haida Language class by fall 2018.
Happy April Fools’ Haida Gwaii!
