On Friday the Williams Lake Community Band put on an upbeat, skilled Christmas Concert for the community at City Hall.
Joined on stage by the Just for Fun Women’s Choir the seats of the council chamber were full, with some even standing around the edges to make room. Young and old, dozens came out to experience some Christmas cheer together under one roof.
They listened for over an hour to a wide range of festive tunes, including old classics like Winter Wonderland, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and Silver Bells. When the Just for Fun Women’s Choir joined the stage a more snazzy crooning vibe began, including a foxy rendition of Santa Baby.

Community band member Margaret Waring said that she and the other 30 members of the band practice every Thursday night to put on shows like their Christmas concert. They’re always looking for new band members too, she added, especially old high school band members looking to dust off their instrument.

“It’s a very mixed group of people we have some students from Lake City Secondary Campus, some senior citizens, a whole mix, it’s a really nice group to work with,” Waring said.
On Feb. 9, 2019, she encourages interested members of the community to come to a workshop they’re holding with a UBC professor or attend the concert they’ll be putting on that night.
Waring said that she feels live music like the one the band provided for their concert is good for people’s mental, social and physical health, something she and the other band members are happy to help provide.
“There are some excellent music programs here, we have two band leaders who have done a wonderful job of growing the band program here for students. There’s more live and local music because there’s a lot of people in town who are talented musicians and its good to support them,” Waring said.
Admission to the concert was by donation to the Williams Lake Food Bank.
