Studio Theatre, part of the Chemainus Theatre’s summer offerings, is presenting Lauren Gunderson’s I and You on stage Aug 22-31.
Gunderson was the most popular playwright during the 2017-18 Season for the US, with a total of 27 productions.
At 35, this busy female writer has over 20 works produced. I and You won a major award in 2014 and was part of a National New Play Network “rolling” world premiere.
I and You portrays youth, friendship and living life with the witty and uplifting banter of two high school students, Anthony and Caroline.
“Did my mother set this up? Did she do this? She would totally do this — make up some stupid thing to make me feel involved. I have a life, OK. I text. A lot.”
Caroline is housebound due to illness. Anthony bursts in: unannounced, uninvited, and armed with a copy of Walt Whitman’s poetry, a school project due the next day, and waffle fries. Caroline is not impressed. But an unlikely friendship develops over the course of the play as the two bond over poetry and a seemingly mundane piece of homework. Hopes and dreams are revealed as the bond deepens.
Bringing this award-winning drama to life on stage are Jolene Bernardino as Caroline and Nicholas Bradbury as Anthony, under the direction of John Han.
Remember, the Studio Theatre is not located at the Chemainus Theatre itself. It can be found at 9574 Bare Point Rd. in Chemainus.
This is a fast-paced, 90-minute two-hander that is recommended for ages 12 and up.
