Comox Valley Arts is continuing with its programming series, PRACTICE: Inside the Creative Process, offering workshops and free artist talks to allow the community to explore and discover more of their own creativity. This program is supported by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program.
Coming up in January 2020 is an in-depth workshop, “Using Egg Tempera,” with Bill Kerr, and a free artist talk, “Seeing Through A Sculptor’s Eyes” with Bill Friesen.
On Jan. 18, at the Tsolum Building in Lewis Park, artists interested in exploring a new – but very old – medium, can join Kerr for a full-day workshop exploring the essentials of egg tempera. This technique was used by Renaissance artists such as Botticelli and Da Vinci, and continues in use today. Participants will learn how to prepare the egg-based paint and techniques for using it in their creative practice.
This workshop is designed for artists who are seeking new ways to express their ideas, or emerging artists looking to find a medium that fits their vision. Kerr has been a painter and instructor for nearly 40 years, exploring watercolours, acrylics, oils and egg tempera in a wide variety of subjects. The workshop is $175, and online registration is available at comoxvalleyarts.tickit.ca
On Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Visitor Centre, join Friesen to discover the different way that a sculptor looks at the world. Friesen has been an artist since a young age, primarily in and around sculpting, but also drawing and painting. He works in metal, wood, and stone.
This free artist talk is for anyone who is curious about sculpture, what inspires a sculptor and how they might use their art form to interpret the world.
More talks and workshops are scheduled through to April, so far. Learn more at comoxvalleyarts.com
