A mini-exhibit at the Nanaimo Museum helps preserve and share history of the Nanaimo Yacht Club.
The exhibit opens this month to coincide with the start of the boating season and will feature didactic panels capturing key moments in the club’s 80-year history.
An end panel will be created denoting recent community-focused events such as the annual Sail Past, the club’s contribution to the new Nanaimo Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Boat House and to the launch of the J.C. MacGregor, the new Auxiliary Coast Guard Rescue Vessel.
The yacht club donated the Queen’s Cup, the earliest known yachting trophy in B.C., to the museum’s Adopt-an-Artifact program. It was first awarded to Hudson’s Bay Company mine manager Charles Samuel Nicol in the earliest known yacht race on the coast in 1862.
“The mini-exhibit, tour and talk and adoption of the Silver Queen’s Cup trophy artifact at the museum provide a unique opportunity to celebrate this milestone and share the club’s history and its role in our community,” said Basil Hobbs, yacht club commodore.
The mini-exhibit will be on display throughout the summer.
