September 27, 1941 – April 26, 2023
In loving memory ~
Kaytee Devlin (née Kay Cecile Ogden) was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, on September 27, 1941. Kaytee died by medically assisted death in her home on April 26, 2023, surrounded by family.
Kaytee moved to Ucluelet in 1996, realizing a lifelong dream of living on Vancouver Island. She loved the walking trails and spying eagles perched on high treetops. She developed strong friendships with amazing people. Kaytee truly enjoyed the small-town connections. After she retired, she volunteered for many years at the local food bank, Foodbank on the Edge, where she met many of her friends.
Kaytee’s life passions included singing, laughing, sewing, gardening, and walking. In decent weather, Kaytee was happiest with her hands in the soil, planting and tending her gardens while singing or whistling. In inclement weather, you could find her in her recliner beside her fireplace, hand-sewing quilts, bags, and other items from scrap fabric. Kaytee could often be seen walking to the Co-op or along the trails chatting with friends or reading her current book. She passed her love of reading to all her children.
Kaytee was predeceased by her sister Barbara (Harold) and brother Ron (Gail). She is survived by Hollie (Leah), Jim (Sandra, sons Matt and Theo) and Randal (Debbie, daughters Lauren and Charley Jo, sons William, Henry, and Samuel).
Throughout her 10 months with metastatic cancer Kaytee maintained her joy in life and in her friends, remaining strongly independent, whistling, humming, and singing to the end.
Kaytee’s family would like to thank the medical community, especially Dr. Lincoln Foerester and Nurse Fred Montpetit, for their exemplary care and tender attention. Their compassion made things much easier for her and the family. Kaytee’s family would also like to share our gratitude with the many friends that brought food or wood, provided drives to Port Alberni, Tofino, and Nanaimo for medical visits, checked in with her often, visited her in her final days, and shared their love and appreciation. Kaytee said over and over what wonderful friends she had and how much she appreciated being part of their circle.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 12, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Ucluelet Community Centre. All are welcome.
