A summer filled with fun

South Surrey Recreation Centre had a slew of activities for the summer season

Barbecues, beach days, summer camps, outdoor movies and just plain old-fashioned relaxing days are what summer is all about.

We have celebrated and embraced the summer spirit here at South Surrey Recreation Centre 100 per cent.

From the BC Summer Games to Family Movie Night in the garden, our facility has been filled with the energy of all ages enjoying summer time on the Semiahmoo Peninsula.

Our Intergenerational Garden has flourished over the summer, with gigantic sunflowers, sweet peas, scarlet runner beans, strawberries, tomatoes and a variety of herbs.

Kids, parents, grandparents, and Rec Centre participants have all enjoyed being in the garden, whether they are helping with the garden or participating in classes.

If you would like to visit the garden, drop by the rec centre, then walk around to the back on the lower level.

If you would like to tour the City of Surrey Gardens, register for the Friday, Sept. 14 Seniors Garden Tour, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You will visit The Secret Garden, A Garden Mosaic, Hawthorne Gardens and The Gardens at Holland Park.

Also, on Saturday, Sept. 15, Darts Hill Garden Park is having an open house, and on Saturday, Sept. 8, The Glades Garden is offering a garden tour. Contact our Parks department at 604-501-5050 for more.

Do you have some items that are no longer needed at your house?

Load them into your trunk and sign up for our first ever Car Trunk Sale on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Stall rentals are just $15 (one car per stall) and the registration number is 4302815.

Spaces are filling up fast so start sorting and organizing.

Our sixth annual 55+ Pickle Ball Tournament is just around the corner, on Saturday, Sept. 15.

This is a full day of sport and social recreation, meeting new players and old acquaintances.

All levels are welcome to join in the fun of pickle ball and participants travel from Vancouver Island, all over the Lower Mainland and the interior to experience what a tournament is about.

The tournament fee includes a light breakfast and healthy lunch.

Space is limited but there are still spots available. Registration forms are available at the South Surrey Recreation Centre.

If you are curious about the sport, drop by, be part of the spectator crowd and learn a bit about the game and experience the pickle ball buzz.

Enjoy Bus Day Tours has an exciting trip planned to visit the King Tut Exhibit in Seattle on Thursday, Sept. 6.

Enjoy a day filled with ancient history and treasured stories at the Pacific Science Center then a delicious dinner at the Outback Steakhouse before you travel home.

You don’t want to miss this special day, so contact the centre at 604-592-6970 or go online to register. Registration number is 4299597.

Our next Foot Care Clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 5, so if your summer feet need some pampering, contact our office at 604-590-6970 and get an appointment with one of the registered nurses who offer this service.

Enjoy the rest of your summer holidays and stay healthy through activity.

See you at the centre!
