The scenic Village of Lumby is preparing for a sweet invasion on Aug. 27.
For the second year in a row, Lumby Public Market will be the site of the B.C. Butter Tart Festival & Contest.
“It seems everybody has a cherished family butter tart recipe with flaky pastry, delicious golden filling and melt-in-the-mouth goodness, but it’s also one of the most versatile desserts anywhere,” said Donna Easto, who is organizing the event with Judith Farago. “You can put just about anything into a butter tart, from the traditional raisins, to bacon or Okanagan lavender, and it all tastes great.”
This year’s theme is “Back to Basics – Celebrating Old Time Goodness.” Contest entrants will vie for the title of “Best Butter Tart” in two categories: traditional and non-traditional.
The festival opens at 9 a.m. and Easto said market vendors are getting into the fun.
“There will be lots of butter tarts, and one vendor promises butter tart bannock,” she said.
In the countdown to the Aug. 27 festival, Easto and Farago expect to see plenty of butter tarts.
“It’s only our second year, but if last year’s festival is any indication, we should have some outstanding traditional tarts and non-traditional ones too. It doesn’t get much sweeter.”
