Burnett: Christmas gift ideas for the avid gardener

Columnist offers a gift of his time as a special Christmas present.

Not a lot of gardening being done right now, however, you better believe all your gardening friends are pining for spring when they can get out in the yard.

Meanwhile, there is a little event called Christmas and what better way to please a gardener than to get him or her something relating to this great pastime.

In order to avoid duplicating something the gardener may already possess it may be prudent to have a casual conversation and pose questions such as: “So, what are your favourite pruning shears?”

Then find out if they actually have a pair in good working order.

As it can be difficult to determine exactly what your friend is lacking in gardening equipment, maybe consider something that is consumable such as potting soil or fertilizer.

I called around to some of the garden centres to get some of their ideas and here is a list you can go by.

Most of them carry items such as gardening gloves, pruning shears, pruning saws, seeds, hand tools, heating pads and containers.

Art Knapps carry some interesting items such as Bat Boxes for those who wish to have these fascinating creatures in the yard to help keep down the insect population in particular mosquitoes.

Knapps also has a great selection of thermometers including the minimum/maximum type which will record how cold it it got at night and how hot during the day.

Dogwood Nurseries in West Kelowna has special gift packs for gardeners already made up as well as a great selection of indoor and outdoor free-standing water features.

Dogwood also has a great selection of terrariums, which are now seeing a comeback.

I also noticed a wonderful selection of garden ornaments while I was there.

Byland’s, as usual, has set up a Christmas display trés extraordinaire!

While there, you can find what you need for the gardener on your list and pretty much everyone else.

One of the things all gardeners would love is a Byland’s Club Card which keeps on giving all year long with discounts and special buys.

If you still can’t decide what to give, then a gift certificate from one of these great stores is totally appropriate.

Something a gardener can always use are sharp tools and the best place in Kelowna to have this done is Precision Sharp Shop, 1171 Gordon Dr.

The shop will sell gift certificates in any denomination to use in a “dull” moment.

If you have some new friends move to town who need help to determine what they have in their new garden, how to deal with pruning issues or just general Okanagan gardening advice, then I can provide a gift certificate for an hour of my time.

Just give me a call at 250-763-8087 or email don@thegardenexpert.com.
