Interfor Corporation has awarded a $2,000 Dal Shemko Memorial Scholarship to Jackson Locker, a Grade 12 student at Carihi Secondary School.
Jackson plans to attend the University of British Columbia next year to become a professional forester like his father who works for Interfor’s Coastal Woodlands Division in Campbell River. Jackson wants to become a professional engineer as well.
Jackson is a volunteer with Campbell River’s Special Olympics, and was captain of the Carihi senior boy’s rugby team for the last two seasons as well as co-captain of the Comox Kickers U18 club rugby team that won the Vancouver Island final in 2013.
“These scholarships demonstrate our commitment to our employees and to the communities where we operate,” Interfor President and CEO Duncan Davies said today.
“We are proud to recognize Jackson’s achievements, and wish him the best in his studies and his future career.”
The Dal Shemko Memorial Scholarship is awarded to students whose parents work for Interfor and honours long-time Interfor employee Dal Shemko, who was killed in a logging accident in 2002. Recipients are chosen for their academic records, skills, accomplishments, volunteer work and goals.
