An educational program in Nanaimo offers help to families coping with the impact of a diagnosis of dementia.

Shaping the Journey runs Wednesdays for six weeks starting Feb. 23, and is designed specifically for people experiencing the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or a related dementia, as well as a care partner, family member or friend.

“It is for people who want to explore the journey ahead in a positive and supportive environment,” said Jane Hope, regional support and education coordinator for the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

“Educating yourself will allow you to gain an understanding of what you and your loved ones are faced with, giving you the skills and confidence to maintain quality of life, both now and in the future.”

Program topics include:

u The brain and dementia;

u Hearing the diagnosis;

u Maintaining general health;

u Life after diagnosis;

u Planning ahead;

u Maintaining your spirit.

Another benefit of the program is that participants meet others going through similar experiences.

“They will learn strategies to cope with changes and maximize quality of life,” said Hope. “They’ll also review information needed to plan for the future.”

Shaping the Journey runs Wednesdays from Feb. 23 through March 30 from 1:30-4 p.m. Cost is by donation.

Interested participants must contact Hope as soon as possible. A brief interview will determine whether the program meets their needs.
