The Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) has been home to many of the big touring acts in the past year, including Toby Keith, Sarah McLachlan, Professional Bull Riding and the Harlem Globetrotters. In the coming months, it’s going to host Maroon 5, KISS, Cirque Du Soliel, Celtic Thunder and Disney on Ice.
When it’s not hosting a Christian youth event like Historymakers or a festival like Vaisakhi, the arena is welcoming hockey fans to enjoy some fast-paced AHL games.
The AESC, located at 33800 King Rd., is home to The Abbotsford Heat, the farm team of the Calgary Flames, that plays approximately 40 games a season in Abbotsford. The team just wrapped up its second year. Seven-thousand fans can be seated in the arena for a hockey game, while entertainment performances can seat 8,500.
“This building was built for the community and the surrounding regions,” said AESC general manager, Jason Blumenfeld. “We want to bring something for every aspect of the community. We strive for the AESC to be a fabric of the city of Abbotsford.”
In keeping with that mandate, the AESC recently implemented a walking program, inviting locals to exercise in the stadium. Since opening in May 2009, the arena has also hosted Reba McEntire, the Tragically Hip, ZZ Top and events like monster trucks and wrestling.
