Canada’s Handyman Challenge winner Mark Falvai made an appearance at the Mulberry Bush Book store in Parksville April 19 and the local celebrity, who is still riding his wave of fame after appearing on the HGTV reality show, was drilled extensively … not about DIY projects, but about what it was like being on the show.

The man behind the tool belt and his partner Joanne Simister will be participating in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer in June and for a donation towards the cancer fundraiser, Falvai graciously answered all the burning questions about tough as nails contractor Mike Holmes.

Most of the people who attended the event were curious about the hosts of the show particularly Holmes and former bachelorette Jillian Harris. The 38-year-old local jack of all trades has also been renovating his Qualicum Beach home for about five years.

He did get a couple of construction questions, including one from Donna Shorting of Parksville, who even brought a picture of her deck she needs help with. She was hoping for some great advice … after all Falvai’s last challenge and the one that earned him the crown as Canada’s top handyman, was to build a deck and his round deck was the winner. He said he still gets asked by people to build one for them.

The Falvais are part of Team iConquer which is looking to raise $139,800 for the BC Cancer foundation. He said the team has raised three quarters of that goal so far.

You can also see Falvai in the Qualicum Beach Family Day Parade May 27. Falvai will be joined by another famous Qualicum Beach resident — jazz musician Phil Dwyer, who picked up another Juno award earlier this month.
